One million electric vehicles now on UK roads
In what’s traditionally a good month for new vehicle registrations, Britain’s millionth plug-in electric car has been registered, with almost quarter of a million electric vehicles joining our roads in 2022.
New figures out from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show that overall sales of new cars grew by 4.6% compared to September 2021. And new registrations of pure-electric cars showed a far stronger year-on-year increase of 16.5%.
Overall plug-in vehicles accounted for more than one in five new cars joining UK roads in September, with 249,575 registered in 2022.
That’s backed up by the latest EV charging statistics from Zap-Map which show that there are now almost 35,000 EV charging devices across the UK.
There’s been an marked increase in ultra-rapid charging devices, which have seen a 76% increase since September last year. These ultra-rapid devices can add an extra 70 miles of driving range in as little as 15 minutes.
Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said: "September has seen Britain’s millionth electric car reach the road – an important milestone in the shift to zero emission mobility. Battery electric vehicles make up but a small fraction of cars on the road, so we need to ensure every lever is pulled to encourage motorists to make the shift if our green goals are to be met."
"The overall market remains weak, however, as supply chain issues continue to constrain model availability. Whilst the industry is working hard to address these issues, the long-term recovery of the market also depends on robust consumer confidence and economic stability."
