Each tube is coated in an outer skin that holds the bulb together when broken to prevent glass fragments separating from the tube. Shatterproof tubes are excellent options for locations where bulbs are more likely to be hit. They are often used in locations where glass could be a particular hazard, like schools or food-processing plants.
