John Eaton - winner of the On the Tools Community Hero Award 2024

Celebrating our Community Heroes at the On The Tools Awards

Congratulations to John Eaton for winning the Community Hero Award at this year's On The Tools Awards. As part of our commitment to supporting trade communities nationwide, we were thrilled to partner with On The Tools this year to sponsor this category and to celebrate the everyday heroes who make our communities better places to live and work.

Why John is our Community Hero

John is a professional decorator with over 13 years of experience in the trade, who is continuously finding new ways to contribute to the industry and the trade community.

A milestone achievement

There's no doubt that winning this award meant a lot to John, something that he recognised as he accepted the honour at the glittering awards ceremony: “Winning the 2024 National On the Tools Community Hero Award is beyond anything I could have ever imagined - it’s truly a life-changing moment! This isn’t just an award; it’s a validation of years of dedication, resilience, and passion for making a real difference in the lives of others. From mentoring apprentices to giving back to my community, this journey has been about more than just my career - it’s been about creating opportunities, building people up, and showing what’s possible when we support one another."

Giving back to the trade and community

John’s work extends far beyond the painting and decorating realm - he is a mentor, a community supporter, and a life-changer.

He runs Summer Holiday Crash Courses for young people and generously donated a fully-equipped vehicle to an apprentice, to help them start their own business. John’s commitment to giving back is reflected in everything he does from supporting local initiatives to providing hands-on assistance in everyday tasks.

A real family business

John’s personal story is equally inspiring. Balancing the demands of running a business with supporting his wife through illness, John has proven that true strength lies in perseverance and compassion. The emotion was evident as John acknowledged his support system, saying: "This win isn’t just mine - it belongs to everyone who has supported, encouraged, and inspired me along the way. My family, especially my incredible wife Sarah, has been my rock through every challenge, and I owe this to her and to all those who never gave up on me, even when I struggled to see the light myself."

Mental health advocate

John also shared a powerful message about mental health - an issue which affects thousands of people within the construction industry: "Mental health is more than just words alone - it’s about action, understanding, and building resilience every single day. I’ve learned firsthand that true healing comes when we move beyond conversations and create real change in how we live and support one another. This award is a powerful reminder of what we can achieve when we make wellness and care for each other a priority."

Continuing to inspire others

Reflecting on his journey, John shared his inspiration, saying: "This award is a testament to what can happen when we rise above our struggles, lift others up, and keep pushing forward no matter how tough things get. To my apprentices, my clients, and everyone in my community – this is for you. I’m ready to keep making a difference, keep creating change, and keep showing that anything is possible with heart, determination, and a commitment to helping others."

Celebrating the heart of our communities

In recognition of the awards sponsors, John said: "Thank you to CEF for sponsoring this award and championing the spirit of community. Your belief in heroes among us makes all the difference, and I'm so proud to be part of this celebration."

Mick Di Stazio, Director of Marketing at CEF, who served on the judging panel, said: “With this award, we were looking to looking to celebrate individuals who lead by example. John and all the nominees demonstrated a real commitment to improving the lives of others. We’re proud and humble to shine a spotlight on the unsung heroes of our communities.”
