Charging at home is often the most convenient and cost effective way to recharge EV, accounting for 80% of all charging done by EV drivers.

A wallbox is safer and quicker than using a domestic socket, as it communicates directly with the car and charging times are reduced by 30 - 60%, depending on the vehicle. 3.6 kW or 7.2 kW EV chargers are standard for the vast majority of home installations.

MOST ELECTRIC VEHICLES CAN BE CHARGED AT HOME USING A STANDARD EV WALLBOX WHICH SHOULD BE FITTED BY A QUALIFIED ELECTRICIAN.

Charging Time

How long it will take to charge your electric car depends on the make and model, as well as the type of battery it has and the type of charge point you are using. The bigger your car’s battery, the longer it will take to charge.

For example, the average time it takes to charge a Tesla Model 3 2019 82kWh battery is:

3.6kW charger - 22 hours

7.2kW charger - 12 hours

Benefits Of A Home Charging Point

  • Available funding – home owners can apply for a grant that will cover the cost of 75% of the installation costs as long as the charger and the installer are OZEV approved

  • Improved safety - a home charging point contains built in safety features, making it significantly safer than using a three pin socket

  • Convenience – a home charging point allows you to easily charge your car overnight while you sleep

  • Cost efficient – charging. Your car at home is generally far cheaper than charging your car at rapid charge points at the service station

  • Property value – having an electric vehicle charging point installed at your home could add value to your property, thereby making your property more attractive to potential buyers if you choose to sell

Charging Ecosystem

When purchasing an electric vehicle, it’s important to consider the entire ecosystem. Charging at home covers only about 60% of the typical EV charge opportunity.

Workplace, en-route and destination charging make up the remaining 40%, so it’s important to understand the availability of destination charging in the local area, and be aware of all the charge points available.
