The MEH Alliance is working across the Hinkley Point C site to integrate and coordinate the delivery of all main mechanical, electrical, HVAC, and associated support services on the project. The organisation's model will help different contractors work as a single entity to deliver the complex installation of cabling and pipework in the power station's 7,500 rooms.

Scope

The UK scope since EDFs acquisition of British Energy in 2009, the EDF Energy portfolio includes eight nuclear power stations. They are seven AGR power stations (Dungeness B; Hinkley Point B; Hunterston B; Hartlepool; Heysham 1; Heysham 2 and Torness) and one PWR power station (Sizewell B), totalling nearly 9,000 MW of installed capacity.

Challenges Faced

Due to the safety critical nature of the project, there is great importance on compliance and quality. All products we supply need to be accompanied by the specified documents which need to be uploaded onto the customers compliance portal.

Additionally, the sheer scale and volume of pallets mean that local businesses needed to scale to cope with demand. As well as constant audits around process and health and safety from the Office of Nuclear Regulation means their supply chain must be competent, compliant and follows procedure to every last detail. Our supply chain had to be briefed to ensure they comply with all quality and document requirements upon delivery.

Our Solution

We worked with external consultants who had knowledge of the Nuclear sector during tender stage and for the training of staff to ensure we work to the principles of IS019443 and to comply with the Safety, Quality and documentation requirements of the customer.

Local investment and the creation of three additional jobs has been identified as a requirement to successfully deliver the contract. Developing a team of document controls to upload and manage our interaction with HPC's document management system. Investment in the local branch to quadruple its size. Allowing space to segregate stock and follow procedures we agreed to. CEF staff to attend the HPC distribution centre to carry out visual checks before signing in direct deliveries, all working with Wincanton their chosen logistics partner.

Fabricated solutions offering expert advice and fabrication services. The export of materials to France for seismic testing. Engagement with the supply chain to expand our product offering to meet the unique specification requirements.

Results Achieved

Quantifiable Impact: We have seen multi-million £ orders and engagement on this project like no other. The conversations taking place will have a lasting legacy on the CEF business locally for decades to come. Demonstrated our capability and capacity to meet the complex requirements of large scale infrastructure products as wells working with customers on safety critical sites.

Key Milestones

The first order was received in April 2023 after tendering and engaging from August 2019, with the first delivery made in June 2023. Our dedicated facility also opened in April 2024.
